Emergency Preparedness

You can develop your own emergency plan by answering the following questions:
  1. What types of emergencies could happen?
  2. How do we raise the alarm and communicate it to everybody?
  3. How do all people, no matter where they are in the building, get out?
  4. Where do they assemble?
  5. How do we know everyone is out?
  6. Does anyone have specific duties, and if so, are they clear what these are?
  7. How do we communicate to the emergency services?
  8. What are our procedures for using fire extinguishers?
  9. How do we know when it is safe to re enter?
  10. Do we keep combustibles away from sources of ignition?
  11. Are emergency exits always clear?
  12. What are our plans for emergency lighting?
A site plan then needs to be drawn up and displayed in the workplace showing emergency exits, exit routes from different parts of the building or workplace, fire extinguishers, other emergency equipment, and assembly point(s).

The emergency information needs to be communicated to all staff, and a practice drill conducted. The Australian Standard AS3745:2002 ‘Emergency Control Organisation’ suggests a drill at least once per year. However, you need to determine your frequency based on your level of risk. Debrief after the drill to learn how you can improve next time. If you want help in any of this process, contact us.
