Hazardous Substances And Dangerous Goods
Do you know that more people die from exposure to chemicals at work than from accidents at work? There are over 30,000 chemicals used in workplaces, and many have not yet been assessed for health and safety effects, nor have their combinations with other chemicals. The problem with many chemicals is that they take a long time to kill you or make you sick, and the gradual onset of symptoms is subtle so that people do not always associate the illness with the exposure to the chemicals. Often, by the time the symptoms are recognised, permanent damage has already occurred. Compounding this is our unwillingness to believe that they are dangerous or we believe that we will be okay, despite the information provided in the material safety data sheets (msds).
